Newest Winston-Salem Eatery Started With Dinner On The Porch

What do you get when you cross a Texas-bred lawyer with a homesick foodie and busy mom just trying to make it to swim practice on time? Winston-Salem’s popular “mom-trepreneur,” Claire Calvin.

Claire launched her first Tex-Mex inspired dinner-delivery service in 2010 as a way to share her love of food with a few friends in her downtown West End neighborhood. Since then, friends turned into customers, and her fledgling business became a full scale restaurant, The Porch Kitchen & Cantina. In January 2018, she opened a sister restaurant, Alma Mexicana, which caters to visitors in and around downtown’s Bailey Park. Both restaurants draw on her love of Mexican ingredients and Texas-inspired international cuisine.

The newest culinary endeavor promises a vibe closer to a gourmet market and quick-service counter (think Dean & Deluca). And she’s even taking on a partner–local businessman and beer aficionado Eric Swaim. The concept blends an outdoor bistro, coffee shop and happening hangout with a specialty market, packaged grab-and-go bar and downtown hot spot. The name? The Canteen Market and Bistro.

The Canteen promises select grocery items, fresh baked goods, premade salads and sandwiches, cheeses, coffee items, and a full bar. It will also house a sit-down restaurant serving lunch and dinner, with seating available in an inside dining area and outside patio facing Fourth Street, downtown Winston-Salem’s unofficial “main street.”

The target launch date is early summer 2018. “There’s a lot of energy in Winston right now,” Calvin says, “and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
